Austin Warhammer 40k uses the ruleset of 3rd Edition Warhammer 40K, as presented in the main rulebook (AKA the Big Black Book, or BBB), appended/modified by the release of the following codices/supplements:

- etc.

The following clarifications/interpretations/'house rules' are used on our battlefields:
- Quarters-based scenarios in which models set up inside of a quarter but
not within X" of the enemy are modified so that models cannot set up within X/2"
of the center of the board.
- All games are played on a 4'x6' table. If we use a physically larger table, escape/advance-type scenario objectives generally still assume a 4'x6' play field.
- A single 'level' of hill blocks Line-Of-Sight unless the target or shooter is in base-to-base contact with the hill. Also, all hills are assumed to be 'smooth slopes', so moving between single levels of a hill is not difficult terrain. (This is mainly because of how the hills we frequently use were modeled)
- A window in a building blocks Line-Of-Sight unless the target or shooter is in base-to-base contact with the window.
The following rules would be used if anyone played those armies, but until then, they are not:
- Codex: Dark Angels v2 w/errata
- Codex: Space Wolves w/errata
- Codex: Tau
- Codex: Catachans (including Jungle Fighting rules)
- Index Astartes
- Index Astartes II
- Codex: Daemonhunters
- Codex: Eye of Terror
The following rules are not used:
- The experimental Hold Your Ground rules, which appear to have vanished even from Games Workshop's site.
